Mariana, in your opinion, how important is French knowledge in order to get through the preselection? I only speak very basic French and dread being asked some stuff in this language over the phone! Is this language really so relevant also for the daily work at the EC?
Thanks for your message! I think French still plays a major role within the institutions, specially among the older people working there (who will most likely be your bosses). However, it will really depend on which Unit you're working on and the amount of native French speakers who work there as well (as those always try to push the conversations to be held in French). In my Unit, for example, everything is dealt with in English, but as everyone speaks French, they speak in that language with a French colleague we have. But only in that specific situation, because in all other cases (meetings, emails, documents, phone calls, etc) are held in English. However, in the end of the phone interview I had during the selection phase for this Unit, I was asked a couple of questions in French. As I am intermediate in French, I was able to understand them and answer something.
This said, I think that for trainees that is not what's going to make such a big difference during the pre-selection or even selection phases, as most trainees I met here don't speak French at all or are only intermediate at it, like me. But you have to consider that in a phone interview this language issue may pop up and that in your daily work here you may find some issues dealt in French.
Thank you for your answer, Mariana! I am a bit surprised that most of the trainees you have met speak not so much French. But that gives me some hope :) and it would be really mean of them to try a chat in French although I stated that I possess only basic skills ;)

Gostaria, também, de te colocar a seguinte questão: os estágios na DGT não se regulam pelas mesmas regras dos estágios "administrativos", pois não? A selecção é feita de forma diferente, certo? Daí que não haja fase de pré-selecção e, portanto, não possamos lançar mão do lobbying? Não encontrei resposta a esta pergunta...
Muito obrigada pela tua mensagem :) infelizmente, nao sei como se processam os estagios especificos para a DGT. Sei que atraves dos estagios "administrativos" (blue book) podes ser escolhida para a DGT tambem e ai' sao as mesmas regras e procedimentos que aqui descrevo.
Mas em concreto para o programa de estagios que a DGT tem, nao sei como funcionam as coisas. Mas suponho que tenhas de enviar uma candidatura na mesma e haja depois um processo de seleccao, por isso talvez possas, assim que enviares a candidatura, contactar as pessoas responsaveis e mostrar o teu interesse em estagiar la (fazendo entao o lobbying dessa forma).
Na verdade, já concorri! E soube ontem que fui seleccionada :D Vou para o Luxemburgo! Segundo me disseram, não há fase de pré-selecção... As regras são mesmo diferentes.
Sabes se há algum blog ou página do Facebook semelhante ao/à teu/tua para estagiários no Luxemburgo? Não consigo encontrar nada... É que dava uma grande ajuda :P

De qualquer das formas, na nossa sessão há 2 portugueses que ficaram no Luxemburgo e penso que um deles até está mesmo na DGT. Se quiseres, manda-me um mail para atraineeinbrussels@gmail.com e eu mando-te os contactos deles (avisando-os primeiro, claro), assim talvez consigas melhores informações se falares com eles directamente.
